School Direct – How it works
The School Direct programme is a trainee teacher role in which you will be treated as a member of staff and be responsible for some classes. The programme is a learn in the job route into teaching and is a school based training programme. Teach in Kent work alongside Tes Institute in order to provide high quality teacher training. You can qualify in just one year of intensive training and have the opportunity to earn as you train should you choose to train in an in demand subject.
The qualification awarded will be Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) enabling you to teach across England and Wales. However we strongly advise that you complete the PGCE qualification alongside the QTS, which is also available through Teach in Medway and Tes Institute. This qualification is recognised worldwide and allows you teach anywhere. Similarly completing this qualification enriches your understanding of education and provides you with masters credits should you wish to continue your studies.
The qualification is awarded by Tes Institute however the training will take place at the school provided by Teach in Kent. We have a number of schools across the county that reach across all 5 key stages. Therefore should you wish to train on the job, at either Primary or Secondary level, please check the eligibility criteria (link) and register your details below.
School Direct Unsalaried places
The School Direct unsalaried route offers the perfect opportunity to become a teacher. You will be trained and work alongside experienced teachers with intensive support in a training year that is shaped around your needs. The pace of the year will be determined by your progression and will be structured to both support and challenge you.
You will always have another member of staff timetabled with you and will receive detailed feedback on every lesson. You will receive a rigorous induction that aims to institutionalise you and get you ready to start teaching. You will also receive regular staff training and opportunities to improve your teaching through weekly CPD.
You will be allocated a subject mentor and have a timetabled weekly meeting with them. An online learning board provides you with all the required documents as well as contact with university tutors and further reading. The online learning board also provides you with the opportunity to reflect on your progress as a teacher and set targets to improve each week.
Although this route is unsalaried it is possible to attain a bursary through the Government in some subjects. For more information on this please register your details below.
School Direct Salaried places
This route allows you to earn a salary as you train. You will receive weekly meetings with your subject mentor to both set targets and provide vital feedback and reflection time. You will also be allocated an online learning board that provides you with all the required documents as well as contact with university tutors and further reading. The online learning board also provides you with the opportunity to reflect on your progress as a teacher and set targets to improve each week.
How do you know if my subject is in demand?
This is dependent on the schools within the Teach in Kent alliance needs. Should one of the number of excellent schools within our alliance like a more experienced trainee they are often willing to pay a salary. In order to find this out please register your details below and we will get back to you.
About the Salaried route
This route is less flexible that the unsalaried route as you are employed by the school. The percentage of solo teaching will be much higher than an unsalaried upon starting the training year. You will also have many of your own classes rather than have another member of staff sat in with you every lesson. As a result this route is designed for trainees that have experience either within a school setting or preferably teaching experience.
